Health Education for Professionals

Health Education programs on many college campuses are often no more than an office of one professional staff member whose charge is to disseminate information and resources to students while providing strategies to assist in behavior change in the field of health and wellness. There are many resources available to professionals in the field ranging from national organizations, to websites, to groups of health educators who collaborate to gain valuable ideas or share methods that are working on their campuses.

• New England College Health Association (NECHA)
  An affiliate of American College Health, NECHA has an annual conference in the fall and provides newsletters throughout the year with information across the region. www.nechaonline.org. • New England Health Educators Network (NEHEN)
  This is a group of Health Educators from various colleges across New England that meets to share ideas, methods and strategies that work on their campuses. This group meets 2-3 times an academic year. There is also a NEHEN list serve that is utilized throughout the year to exchange ideas, gather information and share resources. • Boston Area Health Educators (BAHE)
  This group meets monthly and is focused on "solo" health educators so we can have an outlet to discuss new ideas, ask for help, and brainstorm. For more information please contact Laurie Parlin lparlin@bostonconservatory.edu
• Five College Area Health Educators
  While the official Five College area colleges are Amherst College, Mt. Holyoke, Hampshire, Smith and UMass, meetings are open to anyone in college health. Western New England College, Springfield College, Holyoke Community College, and Mass College of Liberal Arts also have representation at the meetings. The four committees are Alcohol and Other Drugs, Sexuality, Eating Disorders, and SAPIC (Sexual Assault prevention and intervention). • New Hampshire Higher Education Alcohol and Other Drug (NHHEAOD)
  This committee formally established in 1993 brings together representatives from NH public health and private colleges and universities who are committed t addressing alcohol and other drug issues; health educators, counselors, social workers, nurses and directors. • Connecticut ACTWELL
  This meeting is open to all Health Educators in Connecticut. The group meets four times a year usually in September, December, January and May. During the meetings participants share ideas, methods and strategies that work on their campuses. During this meeting, Health Educators also share their knowledge in a particular area through a presentation which have included peer education, holistic health, recharging batteries in health education, hot rock massage, etc. This group also has an ACTWELL list serve. • BACCHUS Network Area 10 (CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, VT)
  The BACCHUS Network is a university and community based network focusing on comprehensive health and safety initiatives. It is our mission to actively promote student and young adult based, campus and community-wide leadership on healthy and safe lifestyle decisions concerning alcohol abuse, tobacco use, illegal drug use, unhealthy sexual practices and other high-risk behaviors.
